- a person’s sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are attracted; the fact of being heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual.
- the way in which a person expresses their gender identity, typically through their appearance, dress, and behavior.
A recent work event made it very obvious to me that the majority of people can’t distinguish between sexual orientation and gender expression. A lot of people seem to think you can tell someone’s sexual orientation is based on how they dress, how they talk, or how they act. While SOMETIMES you can guess a person’s sexual orientation based on stereotypes, a lot of the time it’s complete bullshit.
You should never assume someone’s sexual orientation. Your “gay-dar” doesn’t exist, and you can’t always tell if someone is queer based on their gender expression.
So many people seem to think that if a man is into doing makeup, that means he’s gay… or if a woman cuts her hair short and doesn’t like wearing dresses, OOH she must be a lesbian. We need to stop with the stereotyping and assuming people’s sexual orientation.
What’s the issue with letting people live their lives without labeling everything about them? If we could get past the waaay outdated notion of gender roles and just let people dress and act how they want, the world would be a much more peaceful, happy place.
I know there’s going to be some asshole who reads the above paragraph and says something like “If we let people act how they want, people could just steal and murder and blahblahblahblaaaah”, so I’m going to stop you before you comment and say, don’t be dumb. Letting people dress how they want and do things not within their society assigned gender role is NOT the same thing as letting people murder and steal.
Anyway, that’s it for this post! Have a great week.
